Crime and elderly: a sociological analysis about crimes committed by older adults

Marilia Patta Ramos

The increasing number of older persons in society requires improving our knowledge about the elderly. One area that has received little attention is crime committed by elderly. Is the number of elderly criminals so low, as stereotypes would suggest that its importance as a social problem could be dismissed? This paper presents a sociological discussion on types of crime committed by old people and their relationship to each other and to other forms of deviance, trying to identify, through some sociological theories about crime and empirical research, likely causes and correlates of crimes committed by elderly.
